Policy Brief on Legal Aid for Persons in Custody in Tanzania: A Need for Legal Reform

This policy brief reflects an analysis of the enforcement of the Legal Aid Act No 1 of 2017 conducted by the Tanzania Network of Legal Aid Providers (TANLAP) through USAID support. The main focus is to identify gaps in the Legal Aid Act No 1 of 2017 (LAA of 2017) concerning legal aid funding in Tanzania. Both the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) of 1977 and the Legal Aid Act of 2017 recognize the provision of legal aid on civil and criminal matters.
