
On 27th February 2025 TANLAP was honored to be visited by the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs, Hon. Zainab Athuman Katimba, where they discussed key challenges faced by LAPs and paralegals which impact their work and access to justice in Tanzania.
The Acting Executive Director, Adv. Fransisca Silayo, highlighted TANLAP’s work, including networking and coordination, advocacy for law reforms such as the Anti Gender based Violence Act, Law of marriage, legal aid provision. She also explain the challenges including shortage of funding, donor dependancy, digital literacy among others. TANLAP recommended LAPs to work in collabortion with MoCLA including to be involved on the ongoing legal aid policy development process which aimed at strengthening coordination among providers and establishing a Legal Aid Fund to reduce donor reliance. They also showcased TANLAP’s digital systems to streamline legal aid information and coordination.
The Deputy Minister commended TANLAP’s efforts and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to collaboration, emphasizing professionalism, integrity, and technology adoption. This discussion was made during the courtesy visit from the Deputy Minister of Constitution and Legal Affairs (MoCLA) and her team which was geared to strengthen collaboration between Government and LAPs and paralegals to make legal aid services more accessible, efficient, and sustainable, contributing to a more just society.
